The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of Justices Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa and Venuthurumalli Gopala Krishna Rao as permanent judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Initially serving as additional judges, their performance and qualifications were thoroughly reviewed by the Collegium, in consultation with apex court judges familiar with the High Court’s workings. The recommendation process was expedited due to the absence of responses from the Chief Minister and the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.
As per para 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure, the Department of Justice proceeded with the recommendation on the presumption that the State authorities had no additional comments, a protocol that ensures the appointment process is not unduly delayed.
