A local court in Warangal granted conditional bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy on Saturday, just hours after his arrest by police in connection with an extortion case.
The Kazipet Railway Court rejected the police’s petition seeking judicial custody and instead approved conditional bail for the legislator, who represents the Huzurabad constituency.
Kaushik Reddy was arrested by Subedari police from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad earlier in the day and was transported to Warangal. Following a medical examination at MGM Hospital, he was produced before the court.
The arrest stems from a complaint filed at Subedari Police Station by a granite quarry trader, Manoj Reddy, who alleged that the MLA had threatened and extorted ₹25 lakh and was demanding an additional ₹50 lakh. The complaint was filed through the trader’s wife, Ramadevi, who claimed the MLA used the pretext of public outrage over the quarry’s operations to demand payment.
Police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal intimidation and extortion. The prosecution submitted evidence, including alleged threatening phone calls made by the MLA to the businessman.
Kaushik Reddy had earlier approached the Telangana High Court seeking to quash the FIR, but his plea was dismissed on Monday.
Following the court’s decision to grant him bail, Kaushik Reddy stated that the Congress-led state government was acting with political motives. “Despite the conspiracy behind my arrest, justice has prevailed,” he said, vowing to continue speaking out on behalf of the people.
He also alleged that the case was politically motivated, claiming he was targeted for questioning quarry operations allegedly linked to associates of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Speaking at the time of his arrest, the MLA criticized the manner in which he was taken into custody without prior notice, calling it “an attack on democracy.”
