Suriya Struggles to Regain Box Office Form as ‘Kanguva’ Disappoints, Impacting ‘Retro’ Prospects

Once a celebrated star in the Telugu states with blockbusters like Ghajini, the Singam series, and 24, Tamil actor Suriya has seen a steady decline in box office performance in recent years. At his peak, Suriya’s films comfortably raked in ₹20 crore in Telugu markets, and even his average films crossed the ₹10 crore mark. However, a string of underwhelming releases has taken a toll on his market standing.
Hopes were pinned on Kanguva to mark a grand comeback. The film was heavily promoted, with Suriya himself actively engaging in pan-India promotions, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The producer’s bold claim that Kanguva could gross ₹2000 crore raised eyebrows but also generated substantial buzz. Sadly, the film underperformed, managing only around ₹100 crore globally—a figure far below expectations.
The disappointment of Kanguva has visibly affected Suriya, who appeared vibrant and confident before the release but has since maintained a low profile. The film’s poor reception is now casting a shadow on his upcoming release, Retro.
With Hit 3 releasing around the same time, Retro is struggling to attract attention in the Telugu market. Advance bookings are lukewarm, and unless the film garners strong word-of-mouth, it may not recover its investment. As it stands, Retro seems more like a routine theatrical release than a major comeback vehicle for Suriya.
