The recent controversy involving Bollywood star Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has stirred discussions across Indian cinema circles. Reportedly, Deepika was approached to play the lead role in Spirit, but negotiations fell through after she made specific requests, one of which was an 8-hour workday to allow her time with her newborn daughter.
According to sources, the makers were unable to accommodate her requests, leading them to consider alternate casting options. The situation has reignited conversations about the work-life balance for actresses, particularly new mothers, in the Indian film industry.
Radhika Apte Adds Her Voice to the Debate
Amid the controversy, actress Radhika Apte has weighed in with candid remarks about the harsh realities of working in Indian cinema after becoming a mother. In a recent interview, Radhika highlighted how the long and unpredictable work hours make it extremely difficult for women to continue working without compromising on time with their children.
“I realised that how we work in India is just never going to be a possibility for me,” she said.
“A normal shift is at least 12 hours—excluding makeup. With hair and makeup, it becomes 13 hours. Add travel time, and most shoots go on for 15 hours or more. I’ve worked 16–18 hour days for most of my career.”
Radhika, who recently returned to the screen with her critically acclaimed film Sister Midnight, shared that she now intends to include specific terms in her contracts to ensure manageable hours post-motherhood.
“If I continue working like that, I’d never get to see my daughter. It’s just impossible,” she said.
“A lot of people are going to have a problem with my new terms, but I know what I need to make this work.”
A Broader Industry Conversation
The Deepika–Vanga episode, coupled with Radhika’s revelations, points to a larger systemic issue: the lack of structural support for working mothers in the Indian film industry. With more actresses speaking out, it’s becoming clear that the conversation around inclusive and humane work practices is long overdue.
