Due to heavy rainfall in western Maharashtra, the state government has asked Karnataka to release more water from the Almatti dam to prevent flooding in Sangli and Kolhapur districts.
The water level of the Koyna dam in Maharashtra’s Satara district has risen significantly, and water discharge from the dam is necessary to manage the water levels of the Krishna river.
The heavy rainfall in Mahabaleshwar has contributed to the rise in the Koyna dam’s water level. The Maharashtra government is also urging the release of water from the Warna dam in Kolhapur to mitigate the risk of flooding.
Failure to manage the water discharge could lead to flooding in the region, causing significant damage to both citizens and agriculture. In recent years, flooding in Sangli and Kolhapur has resulted in loss of life and substantial agricultural damage.
