Amaravati, July 23: YSR Congress Party chief and former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking to be recognized as the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly. The petition, filed on Tuesday, requests the court to direct the Speaker to grant him this status, arguing that it should be given to the leader of the party with the largest number of opposition members in the House.
Jagan’s petition contends that parliamentary traditions are not being adhered to in the AP Legislative Assembly. He has highlighted that despite his party, YSRCP, securing 11 seats in the recent state elections, his previous request for opposition status was not acted upon. The petition claims that a letter requesting the Leader of the Opposition status was sent to Speaker Ayanna Patrudi but remains unaddressed.
In his petition, Jagan argues that YSRCP should be afforded opposition status to effectively raise public issues and ensure robust representation in the legislature. He contests the notion that a minimum of 10 percent of seats is required to be recognized as the Leader of the Opposition, asserting that such a condition is not necessary for fulfilling the role.
