 Eluru: June 17: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minster Nara Chandrababu Naidu conducted an extensive inspection of the Polavaram Major Irrigation Project on Monday, marking his first visit to the site since taking office. Arriving by a special helicopter, the chief minister performed an aerial survey before visiting the project site directly.

This visit, on the fifth day of his term, highlighted the Chief minister’s commitment to the project. The Chief Minister, accompanied by officials, meticulously inspected various components of the project, including the spillway, coffer dam, and diaphragm wall. 

As per the preliminary reports, the severe damage was found in diaphragm wall and the possibility of new diaphragm wall is under the examination, the officials explained. The previous government negligence was reason for the situation. 

The inspection continued from the viewpoint near gates 22 and 23, where officials briefed him on the project’s progress. Chandrababu focused on the Polavaram right canal’s extension, inquiring about its potential reach. He instructed the officials to explore the feasibility of extending the canal up to Vaikunthapuram to maximise water utilisation.

A review meeting was held with officials and contract agencies to discuss the project’s current status and future steps.

State Ministers Kolusu Parthasaradhi and Kandula Durgesh, MP Putta Mahesh Yadav, legislators Chirri Balaraju, Badeti Radhakrishnaiah (Chanti), Chinthamaneni Prabhakar, and Arimilli Radhakrishna were present and extended a warm welcome to the Chief Minister.

Principal Secretary of the Irrigation Department Shasibhushan Kumar, Chief Engineer Y. Venkateswara Rao, and Veni also participated in the inspection.
