A spirited rivalry has erupted between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as both States stake claim to Gukesh Dommaraju, the 18-year-old chess prodigy who recently became the youngest world chess champion. Gukesh’s historic victory has not only captured the nation’s attention but has also ignited a broader debate on ancestry, ethnicity, and State pride.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin was quick to celebrate Gukesh’s achievement, hailing him as a product of Tamil Nadu’s chess culture. Sharing a photo of Gukesh with a gold medal on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin wrote, “Gukesh's stunning win will help Chennai reaffirm its position as the world chess capital by producing another champion.

Tamil Nadu is proud of you.” Soon after Stalin’s post, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu responded with an equally enthusiastic message, calling Gukesh “our own Telugu boy” and praising his “amazing achievement.” Naidu’s post celebrated Gukesh’s Telugu heritage, sparking a debate about his ancestral roots. Online debate over origins As the congratulatory messages poured in, social media became the battleground for discussions about Gukesh’s identity. Some users highlighted Tamil Nadu’s significant role in supporting Gukesh’s chess career.

A widely circulated screenshot referenced a report from April, revealing that the Tamil Nadu government had provided Rs 75 lakh in financial assistance to the young grandmaster. “Tamil Nadu’s active support for chess has nurtured the talent of Telugu grandmaster Gukesh. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should take inspiration from this model,” commented one user.

Others countered these claims, emphasizing that ethnicity and language transcend State boundaries. “Gukesh is Telugu by heritage, even if he grew up in Tamil Nadu. His success belongs to all of India,” argued another, drawing comparisons to Usha Vance, the Telugu-American lawyer known for her Indian roots.
