Overconsumption of sugar making school kids prone to Type 2 diabetes: Maharashtra minister
Mumbai, Jul 9 (PTI) Maharashtra School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse said on Wednesday that excessive consumption of sweets and sugary drinks, which are easily accessible around schools, has increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes among children.
In a written reply to Shiv Sena MLA Kishore Patil and others in the legislative assembly, Bhuse said that the Centre on July 1 wrote to all states, informing that the incidence of obesity among children has risen due to improper eating habits.
To check the consumption of sugary food and drinks and curb Type 2 diabetes in children, a ‘sugar board’ will be put up at schools to make the students aware of the dangers of eating too much sugar, he said.
He said the state education board has conveyed to all schools under its jurisdiction to set up a ‘sugar board’.
Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can't properly use the insulin it produces, leading to high blood sugar levels.
