Infosys ousts more trainees, nearly 800 exit since February
In another blow to fresh graduates, IT giant Infosys has sacked 195 trainees for failing internal assessments, bringing the total number of exits to nearly 800 since February. The company cited repeated failures despite mock tests and extra coaching.
This marks the fourth round of trainee removals, after over 300 exits in February, 30 in March, and 240 on April 18. Infosys has maintained that the firings are policy-driven and involve only those who failed three attempts at the Generic Foundation Training Program.
Affected trainees, many of whom had waited over two years for onboarding, were informed via email on April 29: “You have not met the qualifying criteria… You will not be able to continue your journey in the apprenticeship program.”
To soften the blow, Infosys has tied up with UpGrad and NIIT to offer free 12-week BPM and IT upskilling programs. Around 250 trainees have enrolled, while 150 have opted for outplacement services.
The company is offering a one-month ex-gratia payout, relieving letters, and return travel support from Mysuru to hometowns. Accommodation at its Mysuru campus has also been extended temporarily.
Following complaints, the Karnataka Labour Department conducted an inspection and gave Infosys a clean chit in February. “These were apprenticeship trainees, not regular employees. Layoff rules do not apply,” said an official. The Union Labour Ministry had earlier asked the state to examine the matter after reports surfaced of mass exits and long onboarding delays.
Infosys has forecast a muted 0–3 percent revenue growth for 2025, reflecting global IT slowdown. The layoffs signal cautious internal cost control amid project delays and reduced client spending.
