On Tuesday, a political controversy erupted over allegations of phone tapping by the previous Telangana government led by the BRS. Both the Congress and BJP claimed that their leaders’ phones were tapped. In turn, the BRS demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. On the same day, Union Minister and Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy demanded a judicial inquiry into the allegations. He claimed that not only the phones of politicians but also those of some businessmen and officials were tapped. Reddy also alleged that some police officers acted “like a mafia” and tapped the phones, urging the state government to comprehensively investigate the matter

. Reddy pointed out that tapping phones is only allowed in matters of national security and that too with the prior permission of senior officials. He added that tapping phones for corruption is atrocious. The controversy intensified after the arrest of two additional superintendents of police. Earlier, a DSP was arrested in connection with the alleged phone tapping of opposition leaders and destroying certain computer systems and official data during the previous BRS government.

Kishan Reddy demanded a judicial inquiry into this. Reddy further claimed that evidence was emerging that the phones of BJP leaders, activists, and even the party office staff were tapped. Meanwhile, K T Rama Rao, the working president of the BRS, accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of distracting the public from real issues by selectively leaking information to the media that phone tapping was done during the previous BRS government.

Former Minister K T Rama Rao alleged that the Congress government was not implementing their promises of financial assistance to women and a pension to old people. In response, the Telangana Congress submitted a representation to the state’s chief secretary and the director general of police, urging them to ensure that the entire administration is clean. They also asked for a strict warning to be given to officers of all the departments to restrain themselves from malpractices and corruption, in the larger interests of the people of Telangana.
