Mumbai: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, is poised to revolutionise the quick commerce market in India through its digital commerce arm, JioMart. Starting next month, JioMart will embark on delivering groceries under 30 minutes in select cities.
The initial rollout will cover 7-8 cities, with ambitious plans to expand its reach to approximately 1,000 cities in future. In a departure from the dark store model adopted by competitors like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, JioMart will leverage Reliance Retail’s expansive network comprising over 18,000 stores nationwide.
The entry of JioMart into the quick commerce sector is expected to catalyse significant transformations within the Indian retail industry, potentially disrupting conventional business models and reshaping consumer shopping behaviors. This move may lead to heightened competition, enhanced services, and more competitive pricing, ushering in a new era in India’s retail landscape.
JioMart’s strategic initiative is designed to provide it with a competitive advantage by capitalising on existing infrastructure to meet the burgeoning demand for rapid delivery services. Initially, the focus will be on grocery deliveries, with plans for gradual expansion to encompass non-grocery items as well.
This move marks JioMart’s re-entry into the quick commerce realm, following the discontinuation of its JioMart Express 90-minute delivery service last year. The renewed focus on quick commerce aligns with the sector’s robust growth, witnessing a 77 percent year-on-year increase in gross merchandise value to $2.8 billion in 2023.
In parallel, other major players in the quick commerce domain, including Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and Walmart-owned Flipkart, are augmenting their product offerings and enhancing their market presence. Tata Digital’s BBnow is also considering substantial investments in this dynamic sector.
With JioMart’s imminent launch of its 30-minute grocery delivery service, the Indian instant delivery landscape is poised for a significant overhaul. Backed by Reliance Retail’s extensive network and the burgeoning demand for rapid deliveries, JioMart’s latest offering is primed to emerge as a formidable contender in this burgeoning market segment.
