The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an order suspending Venkata Reddy, the former managing director of the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC). The suspension order was issued by chief secretary Nirab Kumar Prasad, citing numerous irregularities in the issuance of sand permits. The suspension order notes that Venkata Reddy acted in contravention of the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) judgment, prompting the government to take immediate action. During his suspension, Venkata Reddy is not permitted to leave the headquarters, and the CID is already investigating his activities. Authorities have indicated that criminal charges may also be filed against him.
Venkata Reddy, who hails from the Central Services, was due to complete his deputation today (Thursday). In the event that he was not suspended, there was a possibility of him being relieved from his duties. Acting promptly, the government suspended him last night after consulting legal advisors.
The decision came in response to a slew of complaints received against Venkata Reddy. During the previous administration, Venkata Reddy faced accusations of manipulations involving sand, beach sand, coal, and mines. Given these allegations, senior officials from the Department of Mines initiated an investigation.
Following their inquiry, senior officials recommended to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu that Venkata Reddy be suspended and a case registered against him.
Consequently, Venkata Reddy was suspended just before he could be relieved of his duties. This suspension marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address corruption and irregularities within the APMDC. The government’s swift action underscores its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources
