Vijayawada: June 11: Telugu Desam Party chief and chief minister-elect N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday made a decisive announcement, declaring Amaravati will be the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing a joint meeting of the NDA, where he was unanimously elected as the NDA leader in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Naidu stated, “Our capital is Amaravati. Amaravati is the capital.” Amaravati, the brainchild of Chandrababu Naidu, faced setbacks in 2019 when the TDP lost power to the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party. Jagan had proposed the concept of three capitals, but Naidu has now firmly reinstated the decision for a single capital. Simultaneously, Naidu mentioned plans to develop Visakhapatnam as the financial capital and to prioritize the development of Kurnool.
Jagan’s three-capital proposal included Amaravati as the Legislative capital, Kurnool as the Judicial capital, and Visakhapatnam as the Administrative capital. However, this proposal encountered legal challenges, and Jagan’s administration failed to resolve the capital city issue during his tenure. This failure significantly impacted the recent general elections, resulting in a resounding defeat for the YSR Congress Party.
The TDP emphasises that Amaravati as the capital will be pivotal for the economic development of Andhra Pradesh and job creation. With the Telugu Desam Party’s landslide victory in the 2024 general elections, the momentum for Amaravati as the capital city is regaining strength
