The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has significantly reduced wastage of rice and wheat in recent years. Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi announced that the wastage of rice has decreased from 0.39 per cent in 2014 to 0.07 per cent, while wheat transit loss has reduced from 0.35 per cent in 2013-14 to 0.14 per cent.
The FCI has been making continuous efforts to minimize wastage and ensure the quality of food grains by improving storage practices. These efforts have led to a drastic reduction in grain wastage and transit loss. The minister also mentioned that the FCI has banned open storage for wheat and is using scientifically built godowns and proper storage practices.
Additionally, the government is actively upgrading storage capacities and facilities, with Rs 1,500 crore allocated for the upgradation of dilapidated buildings in Maharashtra. These measures are part of the government’s commitment to reducing food grain wastage and enhancing storage facilities through continuous technological advancements and investments.
