During Zero Hour, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, called on the government to declare the recent calamity in Kerala’s Wayanad a national disaster. He requested higher compensation for the affected people and emphasized the need to declare the Wayanad landslides a national disaster.
Gandhi expressed concern about the situation, stating that he had personally witnessed the devastation and visited many different places affected by the disaster. He mentioned that in some cases, entire families were wiped out, leaving behind only one survivor, whether it was an adult or a child. Gandhi expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to the disaster relief efforts.
He also highlighted the commendable support provided by the state governments of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, as well as the central forces and the army during the rescue operations. Additionally, Gandhi noted the unity displayed by communities, appreciating the solidarity demonstrated regardless of differing ideologies.
He pointed out the critical impact of the landslides on vital roads, which exacerbated the crisis. Expressing concern for the situation, Gandhi urged the government to provide a comprehensive rehabilitation package, construct disaster-resistant infrastructure, and increase compensation for those affected. He also emphasized the potential for the casualty count to rise, with more than 200 reported dead and a significant number still missing.
