The Wayanad district was hit by massive landslides two days ago, resulting in the deaths of 173 people and over 200 injuries. The casualties include 23 children and 70 women. The district administration reported that 100 bodies have been identified, and post-mortem examinations of 219 remains, including body parts, have been completed. Furthermore, 221 people were admitted to hospitals from the affected areas, with 91 still receiving treatment.

Rescue operators are facing difficult conditions such as waterlogged soil as they continue to search for survivors or bodies in the destroyed homes and buildings. The government’s official estimate on Wednesday evening reported 191 missing people, but sources indicate that the actual number may be higher.

The landslides occurred around 2 am and 4:10 am on Tuesday, resulting in a high number of casualties as people were caught off-guard while sleeping.

The affected areas, including the hamlets of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, have been left with a trail of death, destruction, and despair due to the massive landslides triggered by torrential rains.
