Many communities have called for a Bharat Bandh on Wednesday to protest the Supreme Court’s verdict in favor of the classification of sub-castes in SC and ST reservations. On August 1, a broad constitutional bench of the Supreme Court agreed to divide SCs and STs into sub-castes. The bench stated in its judgment that “reservation should be given priority to those who really need it.” However, some groups oppose this decision.
The main purpose of the Bharat Bandh is to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision on reservations and demand its reversal. Many political and social organizations are expected to support this bandh. In a video conference with higher officials, police advised that there is a possibility of violent incidents during the bandh and to be alert in this regard. Commissioners, District Collectors, and senior police officers participated in this meeting.
Especially in the most problematic area of western Uttar Pradesh, heightened alert has been announced. Authorities are taking extensive measures to provide security to the people during the protests. Educational institutions and shops will be closed, and the activities of private companies will come to a standstill.
Additionally, some groups in Telugu states have supported the bandh. Members of the Dalit Mahasabha stated that they are holding a bandh on Wednesday against the Supreme Court’s decision to carry out SC classification. Public and private educational institutions, transport, commercial and business institutions, public and private sector organizations have been asked to cooperate in the bandh.
