On Friday, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu officially took charge as newly appointed election commissioners. The former bureaucrats were appointed to the position on Thursday, making them the first individuals to be appointed as members of the poll panel since the new law on appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and ECs was implemented. CEC Rajiv Kumar warmly welcomed them, recognizing the significance of their joining at a historic point when the Election Commission is all set to conduct Lok Sabha elections. This was confirmed by a spokesperson. The vacancies for the positions had arisen as a result of Anup Chandra Pandey’s retirement on February 14 and Arun Goel’s sudden resignation on March 8. Both Gyanesh Kumar and Sandhu are 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, belonging to the Kerala and Uttarakhand cadres, respectively.
