Coalition Government Takes Another Key Decision, Renames Jagananna Colonies

The coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has taken another significant decision, potentially delivering a setback to former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The government has decided to change the name of a housing scheme initiated by the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government. Under the Navaratnalu – Pedalandariki Illu scheme, the previous administration had constructed housing colonies for the poor and named them "Jagananna Colonies." The initiative involved allotting plots of land, each measuring one cent, to the underprivileged in villages.

However, the current government has announced a new name for these colonies. As per the latest directive issued by Special Chief Secretary Ajay Jain on Friday, the Jagananna Colonies will now be known as PMAY-NTR Nagar. The decision was made because the central government provides substantial financial support for these housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The previous YSRCP government had chosen not to use the central scheme’s name and had branded the colonies as Jagananna Colonies instead.

Since the coalition government led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) took office, several schemes named after Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy have undergone renaming. Many of these schemes have been renamed after freedom fighters and social reformers. Following this trend, the government decided to rename Jagananna Colonies as PMAY-NTR Nagar. Earlier, the government had also changed the names of welfare programs such as Amma Vodi, YSR Rythu Bharosa, Jagananna Vidya Kanuka, Jagananna Gorumudda, and Jagananna Vidya Deevena.
