The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to review and strengthen regulations in order to reduce the number of pesky and spam calls. TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti stated that addressing the issue of unsolicited communications from unauthorized telemarketers is a top priority for the regulator.

TRAI recently held discussions with service providers on this matter and is planning to take serious action to prevent spam calls by closing any existing loopholes in the regulations. TRAI is urging all stakeholders, especially access service providers and their telemarketers, to take proactive measures to prevent bulk communications using voice calls.

The regulator seeks to implement technical solutions for traceability and prevent bulk calling by enterprise customers using 10-digit numbers. Additionally, TRAI is collaborating with other regulators to address the rising instances of fraud and scams over calls.

Lahoti emphasized that TRAI’s role is to control spam calls, while addressing fraud and scams falls within the domain of law enforcement, involving multiple regulators. TRAI is considering strengthening regulations to make them more strict to control spam calls, while addressing scams and fraud will involve law enforcement.
