The Mizoram Tourism Department recently announced that over 196,000 tourists, including foreigners, visited the state in 2023.
Of these, 193,445 were domestic visitors, while 3,435 were foreigners. Americans, with 1,162 tourists, topped the list of foreign visitors, followed by tourists from Japan, Australia, Israel, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
In 2022-23, the total tourist footfall was over 222,000, with 218,000 domestic visitors and 3,551 foreigners. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourist footfall was minimal in the previous years, with 20,564 visitors in 2020-21 and 132,000 in 2021-22.
The state’s tourism policy, which focuses on sustainable development, strengthening institutional frameworks, and skill development, among other things, is making headway.
The policy is also geared towards using tourism as a tool for local community development and poverty eradication while maintaining economic, social, and environmental responsibilities. In the past, foreign tourists had to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Union Home Ministry to travel to Mizoram.
However, the Ministry has suspended PAP, and foreign visitors, except those from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China, are now exempt.
Nevertheless, all foreigners must report to the Foreigner Registration Office in Aizawl within 24 hours of arriving in Mizoram.
