The Telangana government has recently approved the new routes for the proposed Phase 2 expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to cover a distance of 70 km. The HMRL Managing Director, N V S Reddy, has confirmed that the detailed project report is currently being prepared and is expected to be ready in about three months. When the Congress Chief Minister, Anumula Revanth Reddy, came to power, he decided to scrap the expansion plans proposed by the previous government. He believed that the previous routes did not cater to a vast majority of people living in urban areas of the city.
The Chief Minister wanted new routes, particularly one connecting the international airport, to take into account the increased traffic congestion and meet future public transportation demand. The HMRL has announced that the proposed new routes will connect the airport to the four corners of the city, ensuring that Metro rail services are available to a majority of commuters. This will help to ensure a hassle-free commute for the people of Hyderabad.
