Hyderabad: June 30 The appointment of Challa Srinivasulu Shetty as the new chairman of the public sector banking giant State Bank of India (SBI) is nearly finalized. Currently serving as managing director (MD) of SBI, Shetty is on track to become the first Telugu person to hold the prestigious position, pending approval from the Central Cabinet.

The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), responsible for selecting chief executives and directors of public sector banks and financial institutions, recommended Shetty’s name after an interview process conducted on Saturday. He was chosen from a shortlist that included two other SBI MDs, Ashwini Kumar Tiwari and Vinay M Tanse. Shetty’s extensive 36-year tenure with SBI played a significant role in his recommendation.

The FSIB’s selection must be ratified by the Central Cabinet Committee on Appointments, chaired by the Prime Minister. If approved, Shetty will assume the role of chairman on August 28, succeeding the current chairman, Dinesh Khara. Shetty hails from Pedda Potulapadu in Manavapadu Mandal, Jogulamba Gadwala District, Telangana.

Starting his career with SBI as a probationary officer in 1988, Shetty has amassed vast experience across Corporate Credit, Retail, Digital Banking, Debt Collection, and International Banking over the past three and a half decades. As MD, he currently oversees the International Banking, Global Markets, and Technology divisions of SBI.
