A cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola coal mine in southern Poland early Tuesday left three miners missing and 12 injured, according to mining authorities.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am, approximately 870 meters (2,800 feet) underground, in an area where 15 miners were working.
Rajmund Horst, the deputy head of the company that operates the mine, stated that 11 miners were immediately brought to the surface with various injuries, and nine of them are still hospitalized.
Rescuers have located another miner who is conscious and are in the process of bringing them out of the mine.
Six teams of rescuers are working in the area. The accident took place near the coal face, an area particularly susceptible to cave-ins or methane gas explosions, which are common in many Polish coal mines. In 2023, 15 miners were killed in on-the-job accidents.
