A few days ago, the NCERT allegedly made a mistake by attributing a popular Manipuri game to Mizoram in one of its textbooks. Following this, a BJP legislator, RK Imo Singh, called it a “gross error” and demanded that the council corrects it immediately NCERT Textbook

Singh explained that Mukna-Kangjei is a traditional sport of Manipur, which is a variant of hockey and also involves wrestling, thus known as Wrestling-Hockey. The NCERT has made a mistake by publishing the association of this traditional sport with Mizoram. It is purely a traditional sport of the State of Manipur. The MLA urged the council to rectify this mistake as soon as possible.

The Education (Schools) Department Physical Education Teachers’ Association also emphasised the importance of accuracy in educational materials, especially regarding cultural heritage and indigenous games. They urged the authorities to issue a statement and correct the error swiftly.

The textbook titled “Learning Through Traditional Games,” an 88-page publication under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), aims to identify and describe indigenous games of different states. However, on page 24, under the heading, the Manipur game of Mukna Kangjei is given under Mizoram, which is incorrect.

Officials have taken note of the issue and are looking into it. They believe it to be a genuine typing error as the contents of the chapter attribute the sport to Manipur and its history.
