Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported a 7.3% increase in coal production to 61.8 million tonnes (MT) in April compared to 57.6 MT produced in the same month of the previous fiscal year.
CIL is responsible for over 80% of domestic coal production.
The company’s coal offtake, which is the amount of dry fuel supplied from the pitheads, also increased by 3.2% to 64.3 MT last month compared to 62.3 MT in the year-ago period.
CIL’s production was led by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), which produced 16 MT of coal, followed by South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) with 14.1 MT of coal, and Northern Coalfields Ltd with 11.8 MT of coal.
In FY24, CIL’s production rose by 10% to 773.6 MT but fell short of its production target of 780 MT for the fiscal year.
In 2022-23, Coal India Ltd’s production was 703.2 MT.
