The Capital News
The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Assembly Secretary and the Secretary of the AP Assembly in response to a petition filed by YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy seeking recognition as the Leader of the Opposition.

During the hearing, the advocate general of Andhra Pradesh argued that Jagan’s petition lacked merit.

In contrast, former advocate general Sriram, who appeared on behalf of Jagan, contended that the petition is admissible under Articles 208 and 212 of the Indian Constitution.

When the court inquired about the status of the Speaker’s decision on the matter, Sriram informed that a representation was submitted on June 24. Sriram told the court that Jagan was not given opposition status only for political reasons and highlighted that the YSR Congress is currently the only opposition party in the assembly.

He refuted the claim that a party needs to have 10 percent of the MLAs in the assembly to be granted opposition status, citing various examples from other states to support his argument. After reviewing these details, the High Court issued notices and adjourned the hearing for three weeks
